About Me

For those of you who actually don’t know who I am and have somehow stumbled across my blog, my name is Darrelle Moffat. Currently, I am a student at the University of Waterloo studying International Development (see more in About Indev). I grew up in Ontario with my parents and younger sister and brother.

From an early age, I wanted to know about absolutely everything. I loved school, reading and wanted to do everything. Luckily, I had amazing parents who enrolled me in all kinds of things: piano, skating, swimming, soccer, chess, and more. I loved to keep busy. At one point, I asked my parents if I could join something else because I had one free night in the week and thought that it should be filled with more activities. My parents have been so influential in everything I do and they’re still the ones I turn to for talking out everything. Of course I can’t forget my best friend, Sarah. We’ve been friends since we were toddlers and inseparable ever since.

I have been extremely lucky in my life because I’ve had the chance to experience so many great things. During high school I got the opportunity to travel abroad to Spain and Morocco and being in Morocco was the first time my eyes really opened up to poverty in the world. The year after, I started at Ryerson University but left really quickly when I realized that program wasn’t for me. With my year off school, I was able to participate in Katimavik, a Canadian youth volunteer program. Katimavik was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I got to see lots of Canada and learned so much, including how to make bread from scratch.

Two summers ago I got the opportunity to go to Madagascar to volunteer with the NGO Azafady. It was amazing to see from the ground how an NGO works in communities and I had a great time. I also really loved roughing it, living out of a tent for 7 weeks and mostly only bathing from a bucket of well water. It made me so excited for my placement next year and the years after graduation when I’d love to get a job working on for an NGO internationally.

My interests are also as diverse as the program I study. I don’t like to fit into just one category and I like to do lots of different things. Here’s some of the things I love to do:
  • Knitting
  • Traveling
  • Playing the piano
  •  Hang with friends or family
  • Curling up with a book
  • Snowboarding
  • Eat! (especially sushi)
  • Any kind of adrenaline rush (e.g. cliff jumping, roller coasters, etc.)
  • Skating
  • Scrapbooking
  • Dancing on the couch
  • Winter activities- tobogganing, building snowmen, even shovelling
  • Swimming
  • Playing in the mud
  • And so much more!

Before I started University, I created a kind of bucket list for everything I want to do in my life. Here's the one I made then out of magazine clippings (yeah I apparently had some time on my hands). Some things have changed a bit, lots has been added but it still represents a lot of my dreams for a great life.
